The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba has charged the Public Complaints Commission to continue to uphold human rights, serve as watchdogs and peoples' court where everyone can get social and administrative justice.
Pastor Ajagba who gave the charge when the Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission (Abia Ombudsman), Chief Madukwe Ukaegbu and his management team paid him a familiarization visit at Government House Umuahia, explained that the idea is to reduce tension, discontent and even crime among the citizenry which may arise if people do not know where to air the grievances they have with corporate bodies, government actions and officials.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor while stressing the need for the commission to remain focused on their core mandate of attending principally to complaints by members of the public concerning the administrative action of any authority, companies or their officials, disclosed that the state government will soon announce the office of the State Ombudsman.
He further expressed optimism that the federal commissioner would live up to expectations considering his pedigree as well as restated the state governments readiness to partner and give them the necessary support to enable them discharge their duties effectively.
In his address earlier, the Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission (Abia Ombudsman), Hon. Madukwe Ukaegbu said the agency which was set up in 1975 is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring accountability and transparency in the way government, its agencies and organizations engage with the public as well as to curb arbitrary use of administrative powers by public officials within and outside government establishments.
Hon. Ukaegbu while enumerating some of the functions of the commission to include, bridging the gap between the government and the governed, entertaining, examining and investigating complaints of mal-administration and unfair treatment by public servants, recommending disciplinary measures for officers who abuse their office, protecting the rights and liberties of ordinary public workers among others, congratulated Governor Alex Otti on his victory at the polls as well as solicited for synergy between the Commission and the state government.
Our correspondent reports that the visit which featured handover of copies of some of the successfully treated cases by the commission to the Chief of Staff to the Governor also attracted the presence of the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Comrade Chinedu Ekeke, Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Chief Nwaka Inem among other top government functionaries.
